Because it was originally inhabited by Native Americans since 19,000 years ago; when European settlers began to colonize the region in the 15th century, they also brought African slaves. Hence Latin America has three ethnicities:

  • American Natives
  • White people
  • Black people

As well as many combinations among them: white + Native American = mestizo; white + black = mulatto; black + Native American = zambo.
