Mako looks back because he is having second thoughts. This is used by the creators of the show to foreshadow upcoming plot line.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news,but the show ends at Book three. There will be no book four. I do have good news though, the creators of Avatar has decided to make a sequel to the show called the Legend of Korra. None of the characters from Avatar is in the Legend of Korra,(except a very old Katara), because the show takes place 70 years in the future. So, their all dead. Although all the characters we have grown to love are not in the Legend of Korra, It still gives us something to look forward too.
