Metallic bonding involves positive metal cations surrounded by a 'sea' of delocalised electrons. These delocalised electrons are able to move freely as they are not joined to one particular atom. Normally, these electrons are moving completely randomly and so their resultant velocity is zero. However, when a potential difference is applied, these electrons gain a small resultant drift velocity that enables them to flow as an electric current.

What are the difference between metallic and non metallic compounds?

1.metalic compounds are those compound that conduct electricity and heat while non-metalic compounds don't conduct it.2. metalic compounds are solid at room temperature( except mercury and galliumwhich are liquids) while others are solid, liquid, gas at room temperature.3.metalic compounds are strong while others not.4.metalic compound has high melting and boiling points and while others low.5.metalic's are Electropositive while non metalic's are Electronegative.6.Metals have 1, 2 or 3 electrons in the outermost shell while Non-metals have 4 to 8 electrons in the outermost shell.7.On electrolysis of metal compounds metals are discharged at the cathode while On electrolysis of compounds non-metals are discharged at the anode.

Is aluminium ionic covalent or metalic bonding?

Aluminium typically displays metallic bonding due to its structure, where the outer electrons are delocalized across the metal lattice, leading to good electrical and thermal conductivity. However, in certain compounds such as aluminium oxide (Al2O3), it exhibits predominantly ionic bonding due to the transfer of electrons between aluminium and oxygen atoms.

Why is it dangerous to stick a metal knife into an electric outlet?

Metal is a conductor and the electricity will easily flow through it.

What is the difference between a electrolytic conductor and a metallic conductor?

Electrolytic conductors conduct electricity through the movement of ions in a solution, while metallic conductors conduct electricity through the movement of electrons in a solid material. Electrolytic conductors are typically liquids or solutions, while metallic conductors are solid materials with freely moving electrons.
