Monkey Island 4 is particularly buggy on newer systems. It is highly recommended that you download the EMI launcher from mixnmojo. That will clear up a lot of the issues, but it will still freeze/crash sometimes during the pirate or monkey fights. It's really just a case of save frequently and hope it doesn't at the moment.
