Correct me if I am wrong but a fuel pump does not hold fuel pressure it maintains the fuel pressure needed for the vehicle to run. What holds the fuel pressure is the fuel injectors and believe it or not the fuel pressure not only regulates the fuel pressure but also holds it. If the regulator is bad your vehicle will not hold the pressure needed to run the fuel pulse dampener also plays a small roll in this question too

check your fuel pressure at the rail. the regulator may be going bad. * turn key to on but not running. check for pressure. fuel pressure should hold for about 1-2 min at the rail before it bleads down. if you have an inital blast of pressure and then it is gone in 10-20 seconds change the regulator.

check your fuel pressure. With key on engine off it should be 35 - 45 lbs. It should be 5 or 10 lbs higher with engine running. It should hold pressure for 15 min. - within 5 lbs after key is turned off. If pressure is low, or if pressure bleeds down quickly something is leaking. If fuel lines are ok. Either check valve on fuel pump isn't holding, or one of the injectors is leaking, or the fuel pressure regulator is returning the fuel to the tank. cycle the key on and off a few times to build up pressure and seal off both supply and return fuel lines. if pressure still bleeds down one or more fuel injectors is leaking. if pressure holds, release the return fuel line if pressure bleeds down its the fuel pressure regulator that's leaking. if pressure holds release the supply line if pressure bleeds down now its the check valve on the fuel pump.

Fuel pressure problem, faulty fuel pump or filter. Check fuel delivery by releasing fuel hose where it enters the engine. Hold the end of the hose in a bottle and have an assistant start the engine. You should get a nice stream of gasoline pouring down the hose. If not, the fuel pressure is too low, check fuel filter and pump.

there are 2 fuel pumps if you have 1 tank or 3 if you have dual tanks. A low pressure pump in tanks and high pressure on along frame rails on drivers side behind fuel filter. it is kind of easy to change the high pressure one. . if in fuel tank replaced you will have to remove tanks or remove the bed with the help of 4 friends to help pickup bed after you remove the 6 bolts that hold down bed and have to remove tail light and drop down tail lights through bed.
