The Sputtering tends to be a old or clogged fuel filter the engine is getting starved of fuel replace that and it should fix the problem
Probably needs new spark plug wires.
Mass Air Sensor (MAP) is defective.
Could be a weak fuel pump or plugged fuel filter.
sounds like you have a fuel pump issue. You forgot to mention the year of your car. it will depend if you have a mecanical or electric fuel pump.

it onley does that because its a Chevy but u should try new plugs
i have a 91 Chevy lumnia when i give it gas going down the road it sputters and when i stop at a light it will quit unless i keep my foot on the gas?
Try changing the fuel filter.
maybe check for a worn CAM LOB.
EGR valve, Fuel filter, Crankshaft positioning sensor. One of those, perhaps?
