maybe check for a worn CAM LOB.
Timing chain jumped? distributor cap is cracked or igniition wire are mix up
electronic spark timing is your distributor.
If you have the 3.8L engine, ignition timing is controlled by the computer and cannot be altered without making changes to the computer. If you have the 3.1L engine, which has a distributor, you can set the timing as you would on any engine with a distributor.
Will engine run at all if the distributor is not wired correctly
rev the engine to about 2500 rpm's and turn the distributor until you find that sweet spot.
It is electronic controlled and requires an OBDII engine scanner to set the timing if it has a distributor. If it don't have 1 then there is NO adjustment for the timing. You did not give the engine size.
You will have to have an oBDII engine scanner and then go into the timing mode with scanner. You will then move the distributor by hand while watching scanner until it is in the specs. You can not use a timing light. The timing is controlled by the computer. If you did not have the distributor out of the engine are move it, Then there is no reason to set the timing. The computer will do it for you.
To advance the timing on a 396 Chevy, you should turn the distributor counterclockwise. This adjustment will cause the ignition timing to occur earlier in the engine cycle, which can improve performance. Always ensure that you check timing specifications and use a timing light for accurate adjustments.
The timing is not ajustable on that engine. It is controlled by the computer. If you have not removed the distributor / That is if it's a V-6 engine then there's no reason to worry about are to full with the timing. If you have moved the distributor the you MUST have an engine scanner to put the timing back were it belongs. The V-8 engines don't have a distributor. A timing light is the thing of the pass. There no longer used.
The timing is computer controlled and there is NO need to fool with the timing as long as you have not moved or touched the distributor. It requires an OBDII engine scanner to adjust the timing.
Disconnect the plug going to the distributor that has two wores. Start the engine and set the timing to 0 (TDC). Stop the engine, reconnect the plug and the 'puter will handle the timing from there on.AnswerDisconnect the plug going to the distributor that has two wires. To set the timing on a 1984 Chevy Celebrity with the V6 engine: 1. Disconnect the HEI connector so the engine will run in closed loop. 2. Start the engine and use an inductive timing light to check the timing. It should be at 100 before top dead center 3. If the timing is off loosen the clamp at the base of the distributor and turn the distributor so that the timing is set. 4. When you have set the timing tighten the clamp and verify that the timing did not change. If it stayed the same reconnect the HEI connector.
