The flashing light indicates a problem with the AC system. It could be a tiny coolant leak causing low (or no) pressure which you might notice as a lack of cold air from the vents. It could also be a slipping drive belt. There's a sensor on the compressor that senses when the engine is turning faster than the compressor (more properly, the speed 'ratio' isn't correct) so the light is warning of a loose belt. It could also be a bad compressor clutch or even a seized compressor (which you'd definitely hear). Unfortunately it could also be a dirty or bad sensor so you have several things to check out.
