Probably either from air in the lines or the master cylinder leaking and in need of repair before the brakes go out entirely.

To tell the difference, if you pump up the brakes and hold pressure on the peddle and it stays up and then you let off of the peddle and it goes down, it is probably air, bleed the brakes.

If after pumping up the brakes and holding pressure it slowly leaks down, you are either losing fluid somewhere or the master cylinder internal seals are bad, fix them before the brakes are gone when you need them.

What damage can be done driving with the emergency brake?

It can wear out your rear brakes prematurely if you do it for a long distance because the emergency brake pedal/handle just applies constant pressure on the rear brakes as if you were putting your foot on the brake pedal. It also kills your gas mileage.

How do you bleed the air from the system?

It depends what system you're talking about but assuming it's the brake system. Top up brake fluid reservoir. Have an assistant pump the brakes several times ( 5-10 ), then hold pedal in until you say when. While assistant is holding, go to furthest brake from reservoir and open bleed screw until fluid and hopefully air escapes. At this time assistant will note that pedal goes to the floor. Close bleed screw. The assistant can now release the pedal. Repeat the procedure until no more air comes out at that brake. Then move to each brake from furthest from reservoir to closest and repeat the same procedure until all are done. Check fluid in reservoir repeatedly during the process and when done.

What causes no brake pedal after replacing rear brake pad and master cylinder?

Air in the system ----------------------------------- If you have replaced the master, you have to bench bleed it first to get the air out. That done, master bolted on, you will then have to bleed the 4 wheels, till all the air is out. If you need more info, send me a msg. and I will go thru all the steps.

How do you bleed rear brakes on a 1998 GM pickup?

you start out by having some one inside the truck to pump the brake pedal and you start at the wheel furthest from the master cylinder which would be the passenger rear and have the person helping you have them pump the pedal 3 or 4 time and on the last pump have them hold it while you open the bleed screw and have them hold the pedal until the fluid slows down coming out of the bleed screw then you close the bleed screw and let the person know that you are ready to have them pump it again and if they let the pedal up before you close the bleed screw that will suck air into the line so it is very important that they hold that pedal down while you have that screw open and while doing so check the level in the brake master cylinder because if it sucks in air you get to start all over.. and when you are done brake fluid can be washed off using water and don't let it come in contact with paint or it will eat the paint

You have just replaced the rear disc brake pads on your 1999 K1500 Silverado what is the right way to bleed them?

If you have not opened any lines or bleeder ports, you do not need to bleed them. If you pushed the caliper pistons back into the calipers, the fluid just backs up in the line and no air gets into the system. If you opened the bleeder screws, then you need someone to assist. Have them pump the brake pedal until it is hard and then hold it with gentle pressure. Bleed the longest line first into a receptacle as you do want brake fluid on anything, it is corrosive to paint. Open the bleeder screw CAREFULLY and slowly allow the pedal to collapse ALMOST to the floor; CLOSE THE SCREW, pump and bleed(repeat) until you get no air at the bleeder screw. DO NOT BLEED MORE THAN 3 TIMES WITHOUT TOPPING UP THE SYSTEM AT THE MASTER CYLINDER or you will get air at the front end and you will bleed for hours. Now bleed the other side TWICE and you are done.

How do you fix a broken brake line in a 1999 GMC Sierra?

Replace the brake line, bleed the brake. top up with brake fluid. Done.

How do you bleed the brake line after changing the brake pads in a ford mustang?

If you have not opened the brake system ie. taken off any lines or lost any fluid, you should not have to bleed a brake system. Brake jobs are best done by experienced technicians.

Why wont my 1999 suburban shift out of park?

Change the brake switch located where the brake pedal is, a little above. Done!

What is wrong if after replacing the brake pads on a 97 Dodge Caravan the pedal goes to the floor?

Sounds like you opened up the brake lines to compress the calipers. You will need to bleed all four wheel cylinders to regain pressure. Fill the brake reservoir with brake fluid and have someone pump the brakes until some pressure is noticeable ( sometimes if no pressure can be seen you will need to proceed to the next step anyways and eventually you will get it). have them hold the pedal all the way down while you release the bleed valve on the wheel cylinder. Just a 1/4 turn is all that is necessary. You should get a little air and maybe some fluid out. Close the valve and have your helper repeat the pump and hold part. Do not let your helper release the pedal until you have closed the valve or more air will be sucked up into the lines. You will continue to do this until all you get is clean brake fluid and no air at all, you may need to refill the reservoir from time to time. Repeat this for the other 3 wheels, each one you do will improve the pedal pressure you get, but do not stop until yo have done them all. The reason is that you have introduced air to the system, air compresses more easily than the fluid the system uses and the short stroke of the piston cannot build up enough pressure to activate the brakes.. you need to reemove all the air. Next time compress the calipers without releasing the bleed valve, this is usually done with a c clamp or a special tool available at the parts store.

If you change the left front brake line to the caliper do you have to bleed all the brakes?

If you are quick and neat enough about it where you don't drain the whole reservoir, then no. You only need to bleed that line. A trick for bleeding by yourself once your done is to make sure the reservoir is full and the cap is off (don't push the pedal) and open the bleeder on the caliper. Let it gravity bleed drop by drop until no air is present. Top off fluid and check the pedal (with the cap back on)

Can something be done about water in the emergency brake cable of your 1999 jetta glx?

no not unless u bleed the brake system once or twice

How do you bleed the clutch slave cylinder?

without the use of a 'power bleeder' it takes two people. one on the clutch pedal and one below on the slave cylinder bleed screw. once the pedal is fully depressed, the screw is opened and then after brake fluid has ceased flowing from the screw's hole, it gets closed. the pedal must NOT be allowed to raise until bleed screw is seated. repeat until brake fluid stream is expelled with no sputtering caused by air in the line. it is a short run of hose so there should be only a couple of cycles to get air expelled. do watch the level in the reservoir as this procedure is done - if let to run dry, air will be admitted to the system.
