If it is an automatic transmission, you probably have a stuck torque converter clutch that won't release. Try jacking up the rear wheels before putting it into gear. Careful. it could take off if wheels touch the ground.
The neutral safety switch on a Dodge Dakota will keep the engine from starting when the truck is in gear. It is located in the transmission case.

sorry to say this but it will not swap. they will bolt up but the 1996 is a computer controled trans. without the computer it will stay in low gear.

Clearly Dodge Dakota, because the F150 can't go that fast with a little V6 or V8 and the Dakota has either a V6 or V8 magnum. Actually, the 1992 Dodge Dakota also came equipped with 4 cylinder engines, so without knowing which truck had which engine and which transmission and gear ratios each has, there is no way to tell which would be faster.
I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota 4x4 4.7L V8 auto with the 3.92 gear ratio and it is rated for 6500 lbs towing capacity.
If it will not go into gear you have probably missinstalled one of the filters.
on the gear shift at the end of it. You just press it in.
