Why does my horse charge me when trying to longe him...?

A horse may try to charge you if he/she feels threatened or is injured. Ask yourself these questions:

1. Is the horse sound? Many horse owners have been injured by a horse who panicked because of an abscessed tooth.

2. Am I doing it right? Proper longing requires the use of the whip only to maintain the proper distance, not for disciplining the horse.

If you are certain that there is no medical problem with your horse, and that you are longing correctly, perhaps ask a friend or another rider to ride the horse while longing, and have them discipline the horse quickly and quietly with a riding crop whenever he tries to charge. This, coupled with rewards for the horse when he does well, should in time cure him of this habit.
