Try downloading Java from Java.com it is what runs runescape. you can try to refresh Java if you already have it or download a newer version.

first you hold any kind of combat weapon, say a sword, you press the combat menu and press block. This will let you train defence. Just start killing anything and you'll be training defence.

That depends on what you mean with "doesn't work". There are many things that might go wrong (although creating a RuneScape account should be fairly straightforward). Did you get an error message? What did the error message say?

You pick up the "plank" which is on top of a crate next to the wall. Next, you right click the plank when you have it in your inventory and say "use", and then click on the "Low Wall". Then you can climb over the plank bridge.
