As the previous answer says 'It became a tradition in the US', I simply believe that this is untrue. Santa Claus brings presents on Christmas Eve ( I am also writing this answer on Christmas Eve!) because he simply wants to bring happy Christmas spirit in the hearts of families. It is also caused by a tradition by Jesus Christ, whose birthday is on this day. Jesus' presents were gold, frankencence and myrrh.
Because giving stuff to people you don't even know, for no reason at all, is the spirit of Christmas. Santa is a symbol of that spirit.
He brings you presents because he loves you and you have been good! ;)

Santa Claus gives presents to remind children (and adults) to be good all year round.

yes if they behave becusemy dog has got presents
Good question. I am a parent and I give my kids presents. I can only speak for my self, I think. The best thing to do is check the label. If it says Santa, great. My wife and I always label our presents as from us. If you want to be sure who the presents are from, tell your parents that you want them to label presents they are giving with their names and not write "From Santa". Then, any presents that says "From Santa" ... hmm
For those who believe in Santa, everybody, Santa has the right to hide presents from those who were nice who suddenly turned bad, though he is obliged to give out all the presents to those on his list!
Because Santa is just cool I guess.

Elves make whatever you ask Santa for. Then Santa delivers your presents!
