Gypsum is a soft stone. It only has 2 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Anything harder than it will polish it.

Try to avoid hitting your head on the bottom and or being be hit or skegged by your board. try to go limp when getting tumbled, also do not freak out. i know it seems bad when your getting tumbled but trust me you'll be so much better off if you just relax and dont worry.
