Hydroelectic energy is important because it is primarily a renewable energy source i.e. It can be used over and over again. This is important in the society of today as the awareness of the effects of non-renewable energy sources are more widely known, placing a greater importance on sustainable sources of energy.

it is a renewable energy resource, there is no pollution (at production of electrcity), reduces flood risks, can be controlled to produce as much or as little electricity as needed, creates employment

An advantage of using hydroelectricity is that it doesn't pollute the air as some types of electricity do. Also, the water is not used up to make electricity but simply run through turbines.
Hydro (water) electric power is produced when massive forces of water flow through turbines which turn electro-magnetic generators. It is most commonly found at dams, but can also be found capturing river flow. Since it does not CONSUME the water used, electricity is produced without using up resources.

As long as water is flowing over the dam, electricity can be generated. This makes it a renewable resource.
