∙ 12y agoA can of soda will explode when warm because, in general, liquids expand when they're heated. So as it gets hotter, it takes up more room. If the can is sealed, eventually as it gets warmer & warmer, and trying to expand more and more, the pressure will build up until the can bursts.
The reason that it will also explode when it freezes is because of the water that makes up most of the soda. Water, because of the unusually high polarity of the molecule's shape, does what's called 'hydrogen bonding'. This means that as water gets colder, and the volume decreases, bringing the molecules closer together, at a certain point they start to affect each other the same way alike poles of two magnets will affect each other when they get close: they push each other away. This leads to them arranging in patterns that take up more room. Water is densest (takes up the least room) at 4 degrees Celsius above freezing. So ice is unusual in that the liquid at 1 degree C is lighter and takes up more room than the same liquid at 4 degrees C, and the solild form is lighter than the liquid form (which is why ice floats).
So when a can of soda gets colder, the water in it takes up less and less room until it gets down to 4 degrees C, then it starts to expand again. When it's frozen, it takes up more room than it did when it was at room temp, and the pressure bursts the can.
