The Catholic church regards Mary as a mediatrix between God and men. They can have this position because they believe the Catholic church has the right to establish human traditions in addition to scripture. Sometimes these traditions prove to be contrary to scripture which in this case says that "there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." (1 Timothy 2:5). Thus the christian from the Catholic tradition is at variance on this matter with the Protestant christian.

Actually, Catholics request Mary's intercession to Jesus. We pray with or through Mary rather than to her.
