Canon Law just refers to a compilation of all the laws of the Catholic Church, the first was in 1140 A.D., the second in 1917, and the third in 1983. It is just a convenient reference to anyone who needs to access the laws of the Church.

Canon Law is just a compilation of all the laws of the Catholic Church. It is needed because it would be completely unworkable to try and find the appropriate law if they were not all gathered together in one place.
