The latest version Google Earth v6.1 announced to have fixed this problem. If it disappears you can 1) manually recreate the desktop short-cut, 2) run a small utility downloaded from google's web site, or 3) upgrade to the latest 6.1 version.

In some cases the desktop shortcut icon to launch Google Earth on Windows computers disappears in other cases the whole application disappears (application itself gets auto-uninstalled due to an auto-update glitch). First you need to identify which is the case. From the Start menu if you check the Settings/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs and Google Earth is present in the list then you're probably only missing the short-cut which is easy to recreate.
