Both use stripes to signify important regions; in the US they are the 13 original colonies in the country, while in Malaysia they are the 13 member states and the federal government. They appear similar but have different numbers of stripes (7 red and 6 white on the former, 7 of each on the latter). That is the only similarity (other than the blue quarter, which is used by many other flags as well).
