There are many different styles of bridge. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is an "arch bridge", which is one of the oldest styles of bridges. The arch shape gives it strength, and it was the one that the birdge's designer, Ralph Freeman, decided would be the most suitable for crossing Sydney Harbour.
