There have been fortifications on the site of the Tower of London for around 2000 years. The buildings that you can see today were started by William the Conqueror in the 11th century to guard London from potential enemy forces and even today there is a small military garrison stationed there. At various times, the Tower has been used as a Royal Palace, a menagerie, a prison and is now one of London's major tourist attractions. The British Crown Jewels are held there behind very tight security and the rest of the Tower is now a museum.

The Tower of London did not exist in the time of William the Conqueror. After conquering England, William built the White Tower, which is now part of the tower of London. The rest of the Tower of London complex was built by later sovereigns. According to legends, the white tower may have been built on the site of a old roman fortification; which likely would have been in ruins at this point in time. However there is no real evidence for this.
