Why does the US have so many nuclear weapons if they can't use them on another country?

We won't, but the fact that we have them and CAN use them has kept anyone else from using theirs against us - so far. Deterrent. The U.S. is an extremely strong country with a large population growth, not to mention one of the leading exporting countries. They can be a target by other countries, so, the U.S. prepares themselves for impending war and to protect their country. Marcy
