Different histories in different countries result in different ways to measure things. However, most countries use convenient measures like fingers, hands and feet. Most countries went through this phase. The French introduced the meter which was an earth based measure. The Egyptians were the best in that they introduced an earth time man based measure, the cubit. The cubit is related to the fingers, the hand , the feet , the mile (4000 cubits) and the speed of the earth rotation, 1000 cubits/second. The cubit is 1.5 feet or 45 cm. the royal cubit is 52.5 cm or .525m. The Egyptians also had convenient volume measures based on the foot; bushel (= cubic foot), gallon, pint, shot (jigger).
