Why does the Virginia Military Institute use cots instead of beds?

I think it is for liability reasons. Cots are lower to the ground, so if a grenade flies through the window or you are under fire, you will not be shot.
Also, certain people with epilepsy are not supposed to sleep high off the ground in case they have a seizure in the middle of the night and fall off the bed.
Another reason would be bugs of any type crawling into your bed covers or scorpions. No one wants that.
