Current FDA guidelines require volunteer whole blood donors wait a minimum of 56 days between donations.. However, donors with a history of hemochromatosis (excess iron storage) may donate as frequently as needed to control iron levels. These donors must, however, provide written instruction from the treating physician as to frequency of phlebotomy. Other conditions where regular phlebotomy is beneficial (ploycythemia vera, red cell hyperplasia, porphyria cutanea tarda) may be phlebotomized at no charge at their regional blood center (with MD's order), but the blood collected may not be used for transfusion and must be discarded.
