The issue is not so much pollution in general as carbon dioxide specifically.

Carbon dioxide is what's called a "greenhouse gas" because it tends to trap heat. If the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere goes up significantly, more heat is trapped, meaning the temperature goes up.

Some other pollutants are also greenhouse gases, but not all of them, and not all pollution generally.

The controversy over global warming is not about whether or not this happens... no one who knows anything at all about the subject seriously doubts that it happens. The disagreement is to what extent it happens, and whether or not the warming trend seen is a) an actual trend rather than simply random chance, and b) caused by humans as opposed to being a natural variation.
