American and other Allied Powers after both world wars assume that Germany should have no monuments commemorating its once glorious past. Few of these monuments have survived the Second World War. Kyffhäuser Monument is one of the survivors due primarily to its isolation. It was contructed in the 1890's to show how unification of Germany under Prussian King then German Emperor Wilhelm I in 1871 returned Germany to the glorious times of Barbarossa in the middle ages. At the time of construction Germany was one of the most respected nations in the world. In the United States the people of North Dakata named their state capital after the architect of German unification-Otto Von Bismarck. The German language at the time was one of the most popular in American schools. America's involvememt in the First World War changed all that and anything German was vilified. Even today as Germany is regaining respect there remains this perception that the nation should erase its past. Edward R Sharpe
