Because as tectonic plates move away from each other, the ocean floor spreads apart and fills the gap.

The youngest part of the ocean floor is found at conservative plate boundaries where oceanic crust is pulled apart and magma rises from the mantle to form new oceanic crust.
Actually the mid ocean ridge would be the location of some of the NEWEST ocean floor.
The ocean floor is made of relatively young basaltic rock which is pushed up as magma at the mid-oceanic ridges, the place where the sea floor spreads apart.
No. The newest ocean floor is at the mid-ocean ridge.
It is the mid-ocean ridge.
Ocean Ridge-on the sea floor. mid-ocean ridge in the ocean
When gravity pushes down on the floor it causes ridge pressing. Ridge pressing pries the the sea floor apart causing the magma to come up out of the mantle to cool and create a new crust. Not only does it create a new crust but it pushes the continents father apart. That is why over time they grow father and farther apart.
This sounds like the mid ocean ridge. This is where the plates are moving apart and magma wells up to form new rock.
ocean-floor spreading
New material forms on the ocean floor of the mid-ocean ridge due to plate tectonics and volcanic activity. Volcanic eruptions deposit cooled magma on the ocean floor.
sea floor spreadingThe continents of South America and Africa started to spread apart when the mid-Atlantic ocean ridge started creating new oceanic crust which pushed the continents apart.
