Broken wire in the steering colunm.
The security light comes on after you changed the keys in the ignition from the off position to the on position as a confirmation that the electrical components in the dash board are working. It is nothing to be concerned about.

bad VATS, vehicle security system. you need a new ignition tumbler then another key made. the tumbler is 50 bucks at auto stores and the key is 45 for a copy.
It could be a bad battery, or connection. A bad starter and or solenoid could be the problem, along with an ignition switch to name a few.
First guess; the battery is dead. Second; a break in the ignition switch wiring. NOTHING happens? No noise, no clicks, NOTHING? Check to see if the ceiling light comes on when you open the door.

if you're getting absolutely nothing, and the security light is on, then it is a bad VATS system. you need to replace the ignition tumbler and get new keys made.
Nothing actually happens. You are now in a position where the fractions may be added or subtracted more easily but that is all.
