Why does the sun lighten colours?

The phoenomenon is sun bleaching. The sun's heat causes a chemical reaction similar to chlorine bleach. While this happens very slowly, it is still a bleaching action. Our great grandparents knew this quite well because they used the principle to keep linens white by laying freshly washed linens on the lawn to dry. The action kept the linens white and fresh.
