Why is it that there are different time zones?

Time zones were designed to create a "common time" for everybody. Specific statements like "morning", "noon" and "midnight" all have connotations of daylight and darkness. Instead of choosing one city or country and making the rest of the world revolve around it (literally), time is split along the hour breaks the rotation of the earth longitudes. Using this system, everybody has their "local noon", and concepts in poetry, novels, movies, and even diary entries all make sense, no matter your location in the world. To coordinate an exact time worldwide, Greenwich Mean Time/UTC is normally used as the "one clock". In addition, it allows time travel when flying west past New Zealand.

If it is 12:00 noon in London, if there were no time zones then it would be 12:00 noon in San Francisco..... but would still be dark there are the sun isn't overhead in San Francisco until 8 hours later.
Time is measured on a system that is based on The Sun being directly overhead in the day and directly opposite being directly overhead at night. . . because the Earth is constantly turning relative to the Sun, the overhead locations constantly sweep across the land and sea.

The time a mile away is different than the time where you are, but that would really be confusing! So the Earth has been divided by people into Time Zones that are wide enough to not be confusing, but close enough that anywhere in a certain time zone is pretty close to the same time everywhere in the time zone.

There are different time zones because since the Earth rotates, different places get sunlight at a different time. If there were no time zones, 11:00 am would be near noon in one place, near midnight in others, and some places evening and early morning.

In Canada it was to simplify train schedules. Prior to train travel, each town would set their own time by the sun.
