Voldemort realized the Elder Wand wasn't working right for him. Dumbledore had been the wand's previous master, so he presumed Snape was the new master as it was he who had killed Dumbledore. This assumption was incorrect, but nevertheless Voldemort thought he could correct the situation by killing Snape. It says a lot about Voldemort that he would murder someone whom he believed to be a faithful follower just to increase his own power.
