A failing fuel pump could do that.
Could be a plugged fuel filter.

Replace the alternator. It sounds like a defective regulator, and it is located inside of the alternator. The volts should never go any higher than 16.
It cuts fuel to the injectors if the ignition switch has been tampered with. Goes through a 10 amp fuse labeled "TBC." in the engine compartment fuse box.
your not burning all the fuel in one or more of your cylinders. Check your spark plugs and fuel injectors.
It needs replaced. I have read some TEC. sheets and Chevy now says to keep the fuel tank at least 1/2 full at all times are the fuel pump will get hot. A bad fuel filter will also cause the pump to get HOT and quit.
Could be in need of a serious tune up.
It cuts off the engine while you start it up.
Try Checking the COIL PACKS They could be cracked or damaged in some way. replace and try it. should be around $50.00.

Its probably the accelerator pump in your carburetor.
