My truck has a Fuller UltraShift automatic-shift transmission. I decide whether I want to go forward or backward. I step on the brake pedal and press the button that corresponds to the way I want to go, and the transmission shifts itself. There's a button on the shift console for "manual" and if pressed, you use up and down keys to shift. If you do this, it's just like shifting a fully manual transmission except you don't have to shift the rear end yourself and there's no clutch. My truck has had six drivers including myself and none of us have ever pushed the manual button.

Is it electronic shift on the fly 4wd? If this is the case start truck apply the brakes, then while stopped, put the transmission in Neutral (N) take the selector from 4wd low to 4wd high. Put the truck back into Drive (D) then move around etc. If you want to go to 2wd then select 2wd. It the truck is manual shift linkage, you may have to fuss with it to get it to pop out of 4wd low. The shifter rod has to be pushed down then pulled back so it could be stuck.

Shift through the first four gears normally, then flip the switch an go back to 1st, which will become 5th gear with the axle in high range. To down shift you should double clutch too. First, clutch to shift into neutral. Let off the clutch and rev up the engine so the RPMs are correct for the vehicle speed and the next gear you want to shift into. Now clutch again and downshift. When you let off the clutch the engine, which can only turn so fast, will pull the truck speed down. You can give the engine some throttle and slowly back off so the engine braking isn't so rough or sudden. Good Luck!
