If it sounds like it can't turn over and you've replaced the battery, the next thing is the Starter. Starters develope flat spots on them and that can drain a battery in a heartbeat, even a new one. I'd get your starter checked. H-T-H
Because whoever told you that a low battery would cause hard steering is an idiot.
Have you tried all the scrap/wreckers out. Hard to find.
Having owned many lincolns and Grand Marquis over the years I have learned, the hard way, to open/close ALL the windows once per week so they don't seize up.
It will be easier to have your local garage do the job. The top nut is very hard to get off.
Most 4.6 L engines have 3 bolts. The last one is sort of hard to reach.
Replacing the thermostat on a 1996 Grand Marquis is not very hard. First, follow the upper radiator hose to find the thermostat. Then disconnect the hose and drain it. After the hose is drained, remove the bolts holing the thermostat housing in place. Take the old thermostat out and replace with a new one.
I would suggest having the battery charged if needed, then load tested. If this checks fine, look at the connections at the battery itself, they often corrode and can cause this problem. I just had the same problem with mine and it was the starter but the top two bolts are so hard to get to so good luck
I just had a throttle position sensor installed in my 1999 mercury grand marquis. I feel certain it is located in the same place on your 1998. Look up top behind the air intake tube (large hose) leading to your throttle body. It is a rather small black hard plastic item. www.autoclinix.com is a good website for printing out the directions for installing all parts on your mercury grand marquis. Good Luck, Ms. Lena
there is one under the hood near the battery mainly holds relay and bigger fuses, under the dash drivers sid tucked away, if you don't know what you are looking for its kinda hard to find because your prettty much looking up sidedown....flashlight is helpfull
I am currently having the same problem with my 1988 mercury grand marquis ls colony park wagon. Your rings are bad in your engine. If you didn't also notice, when you go to step on the gas hard when you take off, you will also emit blue smoke.
I had this problem on a 1979 Mercury Grand Marquis- it turned out to be a short in the wire going from the alternator to the battery. It was intermittent, so it was very hard to run down. If the alternator checks good, the short/broken wire could easily be the culprit.Rocky_B - See my entry here for more things you might want to check: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_could_be_wrong_if_the_battery_light_stays_on_and_the_battery_still_runs_down_on_a_1996_windstar_after_installing_a_new_battery_and_alternator
Not very hard. You have remove the panel that is under the dash. It should be a big black panel. The switch is on the brake pedal. Remove the two wires to the switch and unscrew it and replace it and reverse the order and you are done.
