This is called a Kernel Panic. The Kernel is at the heart of Mac OS X. A kernel panic can be caused by damaged or incompatible software or, more rarely, damaged or incompatible hardware.
If the Mac is literally brand new (just out of the box) then it should be returned and replaced. If it has been used and software installed on it then you need to isolate what is causing the problem. If it always happens while using the same software - stop using that software and check for any updates. Ensure you are obtaining software from reliable legitimate sources. In the Accounts section of System Preferences look at Login Items. These are things that are automatically started when you start using the Mac.
