The reason yours has only a 4 digit serial number is because all firearms start with the number 1 and go from there.It tells you that your shotgun was made early on in the production of this paticular model of Browning shotgun.

Sounds like you have an "American Browning" made from 1940-1949. These guns were made by Remington under contract to Browning during the German Occupation of Belgium when Browning could not import their Belgium guns. They do not say Remington anywhere on the gun, but essentially were made like the Remington Model 11, with the addition of the magazine cutoff. Browning specified that the serial numbers start at 5000 for each guage preceded by a letter to denote guage. A= 16ga / B=12ga / C= 20ga. Thus serial number B5000 was the first 12ga made in 1940. The serial number is on the left side of the receiver.

By this 4 digit number, the gun was made in 1904, but it would be an FN gun. Sure there isn't a Letter above or preceding the number? Cross Bolt safeties were introduced with some guns in 1951, and standard by 1952. Any Front trigger safety could be converted by the Browning service center to a cross bolt safety.

Well for starters, a 16ga Auto 5 made in the 1920's will have a 5 digit number. When Browning started to import guns in 1923, the 16gauge guns started at around the 26,000 range. If you truly do have a 16ga. Auto 5 with a four digit number then it was made between 1909 and 1913. 1909 was the first year that FN made 16 gauge guns, starting with serial # 1 thru serial# 3200. Then numbers 3201-15000 were made out of sequence for the next four years. So a four digit number was probably made between 1909 and 1911. If you have one of these guns then you need to know that it is not a Browning Arms Co. gun, but a Browning designed A5 made by Fabrique Nationale or "FN" and was sold to countries outside the US. The barrel will be marked with the words "acier special". If the above does not describe your gun, then your gun has a letter or a letter & number combination above or preceding the four digit serial number. It was not made in 1925. Before commenting on the value, the gun would need to be identified as to when it was made. Please re-check the serial numbers and look at the barrel for the words acier special.
