More than likely low brake fluid level in the master cylinder. Check it.

The grinding noise is the brakes pads proably the noise is in the front. The front brake pads are easy to replace and is a do it yourself sort of thing. My guess is your brake light is coming on because of this condition. I assume your brake light has been coming on for a little while now.
If your brake light is not coming on, you might have blown a fuse. You might also have a bulb that is no longer working.
If the brake fluid level is low in the brake master cylinder in the engine compartment that will cause your " brake " light to come on just like engaging your parking brake does

your brake fluid is probably low or very dirty.
Take it to Autozone and have them read the check engine error code. That's where you start.
The light is telling you that your brakes are not working properly, which could be dangerous. Your best bet is to get it to a mechanic who can analyze the problem.
