this could be a few problems. it might be that there is too much fuel going into the cylinders, or it might be that there isn't enough going in (listen to the car; does it rev up high and then cut?). it could also mean that the valve timing could be off, or even spark plug(s) not functioning properly. the ECU might be a problem as well as its the unit that controls all of those things
