It could be lonely, looking for company. Cats sleep when they want to not on a set schedule and often don't understand when its people go off to bed and everyone is gone. It is a form of communication. It could also be that your cat is deaf. Deaf cats will often howl loudly, especially at night when there is less stimulation for their other senses. If the cat is elderly, it may have developed senile dementia. Elderly cats sometimes become confused and start to wander around howling. Seeing a loved one (human or other) will usually reassure them.

Cats are highly nocturnal animals, which means they are awake at night, and they may want you to be awake as well. This is no fault of the cat's, though. There's no sense in blaming a cat for being a cat. My husband can sleep through night-meowing and attention-seeking cat. But i can't. I had to resort to having them back into their little cuddly room with their toys (climbing trees and such as well) - since there are two cats, they play with each other and i just let them back out in the livingroom in the morning. Otherwise, they'll push open my bedroom door and keep waking me up from sleep - I tried to just let them out but I COULDN'T SLEEP for two days and I just had enough. I tried to also make so that door will shut tight and won't open and my cats got so sad meowing, pawing the door for hours... So it was much better for me to just put them in their own room with toys, far away from where I sleep so they don't smell me under the door and paw the door and meow trying to get attention.

Because it is a cat and they are very independent. Answer: The cat won't listen to you if you've already tried hard enough and the cat's just a regular cat who doesn't have much of affection to human beings. Especially if you're the one who brings food and the cat still won't listen to you, that means he's regarding you more as a servant than companion... I mean, if he gets food and attention when he doesn't listen to you, why should he even try to listen to you? You gotta make him listen to you by taking away things he takes for granted. This can be done by not showing ANY ATTENTION to you, or cutting the food to half for couple days. The cat will get angry at first, then realize he can't take things for granted. When he tries to get your attention enough, you can have the dry food in your hand and see if your cat will approach you to eat a lil bit more food (since he'll be slightly hungry due to less food given). If he approaches you and eats stuff, he'll associate the hunger management = you, and might get a lil more affectionate. It's almost like Dog Training but more round-about way. You can train your cat to like you and associate good things w/ you rather than bad things. Then the cat will actually take you as a companion and listen to you. (but not 100% still. He'll be a cat and still do stuff that ticks you off) - my cat wets his toy mouse in the water bowl then drags all over the house 'cause wet toy is easier to bite and carry around than dry toys. He likes doing it even if I hate stepping on wet pool of water, and he wouldn't listen to reasons!

Cats are very stubborn animals some times. Usually when you do not have them from birth they don't respect you or your properties. Being with them from birth creates a strong bond between you and your cat. Don't try too hard to make your cat like you. This may annoy them. They usually don't like you because you are not the one that plays or cares for them (ex: feeding playing, responding to their calls.) Usually the ones that cares for them are the ones that are payed attention to most by the cats. Hope this helps ;)

The cat has been fed, it has plenty of water, and I even took it to the vet and they said they had 5 cases of this same thing happen in a week. They are not really sure what is happening. The cat howls like its getting beaten but the vet said the cat was fine.

Cats are more inactive during the day and very active in the evening and night. Cats who don't get to play and play-hunt are more apt to become bored and lonely after it gets dark. You need to get him playing in the evening, chasing a toy bird or string. Have him jumping, running, leaping, twirling around. Get her really tired out about 1 or 2 hours before you go to bed. After playing, then feed him so he has a nice full belly---makes em sleepy. If you have regular playtime, she should stop meowing so much when you need to sleep.
