Puppies claws will fall out to make room for their adult ones and the same goes for their teeth. Adult dogs can lose a "dew claw" which is behind the foot. Sometimes dogs need to have Dew Claw removed by their vet because they can get caught on things and cause infection. It's best to take your dog to the vets to be sure everything is OK.

This may be caused by the puppy chewing on the claw and pad. One of the best things to do if this is happening is to take your dog to the veterinarian, who may have the claws clipped (removed).

This is an evolutionary trait derived from the original "five digit" mammalian precursor. The dew claw is the remnant of the first digit (it's analogous to a human thumb), and is often useful to dogs who dig a lot.

Why do you take off du claws?

Dew claws need to be removed only if they are becoming a problem to the dog such as the animal chewing on them or the claw getting caught and torn. Some show dogs have them removed for show purposes as well as hunting dogs as a precaution.

Why do cats and dogs have claws?

Cats and dogs are predators, but they use their claws for different things. A cat's claws are very sharp and curved and can be retracted (except for the Cheetah, who cannot retract its claws). A cat uses its claws for many different things; climbing, self-defence, gripping hold of prey and other items (toys for example in domestic cats). They will retract their claws when walking, running or resting to prevent any damage being done to the claws. A dog's claws cannot be retracted like a cat's can, and their main use is for gripping the ground while walking, running or chasing prey. A dog primarily uses its mouth and teeth to grab hold of prey and bring it down, for defence, and as various means of communication.
