The heart may stop if it gets starved for oxygen. That is basically what a heart attack is. There are other reasons the heart may stop, such as receiving an electrical shock. That causes arrhythmia or even fibrillation. The heart doesn't exactly stop then, but its movement is not useful since it is fighting itself and cannot pump blood. Instead, it is just quivering. This condition may require drugs or electric shock to reverse it. If it cannot be reversed, then it is heart attack and death.

If you mean stopping momentarily, like for a beat or two, then that could be due to a number of things too. It could be PVCs. While you may perceive that as missing heartbeats, the real cause is an early heartbeat. Electrolyte imbalances, over-exertion, or stress might cause that.
