I have the same problem with a 8-10 yr old IBM Thinkpad. When connected to an external monitor it works just fine but the builtin still blinks and goes blank. The keystoke Function F7 brings the internal monitor back to life and then starts blinking. Rarely, it will stay on for 1-3 minutes.

There are many instances in which a laptop screen turns black. If the screen turns black after a few minutes, on a consistent basis, your laptop is either running a "blank" screen saver or it is entering some type of power-save mode (i.e. sleep or hibernation).

A CRT (cathode ray tube) monitor displays an image when electrons fired from the electron gun excite the phosphors on the screen. Until the monitor is turned on, the screen will be blank, i.e. black.

Although CRT, LCD & Plasma monitors have have completely different technologies, the above explanation (mutatis mutandis) applies to all.

If your monitor IS on [ check plugs, manual switch etc ] it is probably dying if you get no response in like two minutes, tops. I live in a rural area , and sometimes things get a bit sluggish.

If you shut the computer screen will downloads still run?

The monitor screen is completely autonomous to the computer itself. If you're using a desktop computer and not a laptop, it's perfectly fine to turn off the monitor and leave the computer running. You cannot, however, shut the lid, sleep, hibernate, or do anything to a laptop an keep the downloads runnings. You can turn down the brightness on your laptop if you wish, but you can't shut it off entirely.
