I'm not exactly sure. It could be because your tummy muscles are stretching and if your only a few weeks into your pregnancy, it probably adjusts back to its normal size. But I'm not sure about this.
Well I'm thinking it has something to do with the fact that a baby is growing inside of you, in your uterus, which is near your belly. Not only does the baby grow, so does the amount of fluid that protects the baby, and so does the placenta, the thing that takes nutrition from your body and passes it on to the baby through the umbilical cord. Your stomach isn't swelling, it's growing (well the outside is, on the inside your stomach is actually the same, because the baby isn't in your stomach at all)
You may be uncomfortable if late in your pregnancy.
Early in the pregnancy the uterus has not enlarged significantly and when lying supine (on your back) it will simply settle towards the back of your abdominal cavity. In other words, gravity.
Yes, the uterus does not rise out of the pelvis until 13 weeks. In another couple of weeks you may notice a little bump just above your pubis, especially if you are quite slim.
