is it damp under or near the dash ? if so its most likely your heater core cause it will cause a very bad smell that would be first thing I would check

you most likely have lime build up in your hot water heater. you need to flush it out and change the heating elements. Water heaters often have a sacrificial rod in them that is installed to prolong the life of the heater. This rod brakes down over time and in the right water condition can make a veary bad smell in your water. I have seen it back up into the cold water feed line and make it small bad also. It will often be worse with the more time that has passed with no use of the water from the heater. This rod is installed from the top and there is usually an access so that the rod can be removed or replaced.
We have VW2K. Went 4 100 mi drive . Engine is not overheated but still experienced smoke from hood and a bad smell. checked hood n heard water boiling kind of sound.what could be the reason. Need help?
I'm no mechanic, but it sounds like you could have a bad heater core. Did this bad smell smell like rotting garbage, except a million times worse? also, did the windshield fog up? If so, it probably was a heater core.No Windshield didn't fog up. when we opened the hood we heard sound ( like boiling water)

I hasd a similar problem with a 1990 Camaro. My carpet was wet from a leaking heater core. Smell the carpet where it is wet. Does it smell like antifreeze or is it the color of antifreeze? If so nyou have a bad or leaking heater core. Good Luck

One problem could the water inlet hose "O" ring on the pipe that goes from the lower radiator hose to the block. Also your heater core could be leaking. If that's the case, your front windshield will fog up in the colder weather.sounds like your heater core is bad or leaking as was spoke of. for you said whenyour heat it on , there is a sweet smell. You get your heat from the heater core, so if your smelling antifreeze when your heater is on, I would believe , it's your heater core. As far as the sweet smell your getting from the heat.

Well so far haven't had any water or antifreeze inside the car and no sweet smell inside the car. Some one had sugested the drain hose is plugged or cloged but i havnt been able to find the hose?
more then likely your heater core has a hole in it do you smell a sweet smell coming from the same area or see any anti-freeze if so you need to replace your heater core
