Atticus doesn't fall into despair like Jem because he knows what the verdict is going to be against Tom the whole time that he is Tom's lawyer. Atticus knows that there is too much racism and that a black man's word will never stand up against a white man's because maycomb is very racist in the 1930s.

Jem is impressed with Atticus and he responds by saying that Atticus is a gentleman like him. Jem is Atticus' son in To Kill A Mockingbird.
