Jem wants to protect Atticus and his image of being a fair and just man. He worries that if Scout brags about Atticus at school, it could lead to resentment or mocking from other children or even adults in their community. Jem understands the importance of humility and doesn't want Atticus to be put in a difficult position because of any exaggerated praise.
