Check the pin switches door hinge area(s). 1 is not getting button pressed all the way to break the circuit. Needs height adjustment or replacement. You can unplug 1 at a time until light goes out to locate the bad one.

There is no separate switch for it. Pushing the light switch will defeat the dome and courtesy lamps.
Doors "Shut".
One of the doors is open (or not shut properly).
When the interior light flashing, check all doors, they might be open or not shut tightly.
because the doors are broken becacause he forgot to shut off the light.
The doors use magnets to hold them shut. The doors have knobs for opening.
The door ajar light might stay on in a Mercury Mountaineer if a door is not shut properly. Sometimes a door will seem like it is shut, but will not be shut enough to trip the light off. Check for dirt or other debris in the door latch for all doors.
check your interior light...my manual says it can cause the problem
Check the gauge cluster dimmer wheel switch just to the right of your headlight switch on your dash. If it is rotated all the way up, your courtesy lights will stay on . Is there also a door ajar light lit up in your guage cluster ? If so, one of your doors, liftgate, or liftgate glass is not shut properly or you have a sticking door ajar switch and your battery rundown protection system is shutting your courtesy lights off after the 40 minutes.
The system thinks that a door is not shut completely. If all of the doors are shut tight, then a door switch is loose or bad.
If you are referring to the can light, there is a manual switch on the light that allows it to operate when the doors is closed or to automatically turn on when the door is open and then shut off when the door is closed. If the switch is in this position and the light is staying on, the switch in the door to tell it to turn off is probably not working.
