French children dont wear a school uniform because these were phased out by the government in the seventies. Back then it was thought that wearing an uniform was hindering the ability of pupils to be creative and open-minded. Now there is some talk to bring the uniform back to reinstate some sense of equality in the classroom (plus some sense of order)
They should be compulsory Answer2: why would there be a uniform if you dont have to wear it ? nobody likes school uniform any way trust the people who wear them why any one would choses to wear unifom i dont know teachers dont wear it why should the children??
not to sure but i think many of the schools in France allow they students to wear what they want, in reason that is :) but i think there are some, maybe 15 -20, that make students wear a uniform

Well Malcolm, i dont really understand what the differences of the French and English uniform is. Im guessing that the English dress alot sexier than the French as we have more class and fashion sense.
